The Apprenticeship Model

Big idea

Formation happened by proximity: they watched, participated, attempted, were corrected, then were sent.

Session objectives

  • Place each emerging leader on the apprenticeship ladder
  • Practice correction that develops rather than discourages
  • Replace training events with shared work

Opening question

Who is close enough to us to learn how we actually decide?

Discussion questions

  1. 1.Are we teaching content or forming people?
  2. 2.Who have we let attempt something and fail safely?
  3. 3.How do we correct people here — privately, promptly, kindly?
  4. 4.Who is stuck at 'watching' because we never let them try?

Group exercise

Apprenticeship ladder
  1. 1Write four rungs: watch, participate, attempt, lead
  2. 2Place every developing person on a rung
  3. 3For each, name the one experience that moves them up
  4. 4Schedule that experience with a date

Commitment before next session

Take one person with you to something you would normally do alone this month.

Disciple Development

Facilitator note: open with the question, keep discussion to half the session, and end with every participant naming their commitment aloud.
