Delegation and Empowerment

Big idea

Delegation without authority is errand-running. Jesus gave real authority, accepted real risk and debriefed the results.

Session objectives

  • Distinguish delegating tasks from delegating authority
  • Define decision rights clearly for each role
  • Establish a debrief habit after delegated work

Opening question

What can our team decide without asking us?

Discussion questions

  1. 1.Where have we delegated the work but kept the decision?
  2. 2.What happens here when a delegated decision goes badly?
  3. 3.Do people know the limits of their authority in writing?
  4. 4.What are we afraid would happen if we let go?

Group exercise

Decision rights grid
  1. 1List ten recurring decisions
  2. 2For each, write who decides, who is consulted, who is informed
  3. 3Find the decisions where the leader appears in every column
  4. 4Move two of them fully to someone else

Commitment before next session

Hand over one decision this week and resist reversing it; debrief instead.

Facilitator note: open with the question, keep discussion to half the session, and end with every participant naming their commitment aloud.
