Chapter 18 · 60 min
Pentecost and Expansion
Big idea
At Pentecost the mission outgrew one location in a single day. Multiplication requires structures prepared before the growth arrives.
Session objectives
- ◆Test whether your structures could absorb sudden growth
- ◆Plan the second location, group or team before it is needed
- ◆Decide what must stay central and what must not
Opening question
If we tripled next month, what would collapse first?
Discussion questions
- 1.What in our model does not scale past its current size?
- 2.What must be identical everywhere, and what can vary?
- 3.Who would lead a second site or group tomorrow?
- 4.Are we protecting quality or protecting control?
Group exercise
Scale stress test
- 1Write the current numbers you serve
- 2Triple them and walk through space, leaders, funding and care
- 3Mark each as holds, strains or breaks
- 4Fix one 'breaks' item this quarter
Commitment before next session
Start one new group, team or site with a leader you have developed.

Facilitator note: open with the question, keep discussion to half the session, and end with every participant naming their commitment aloud.
