Chapter 2 · 45 min
The Environment Jesus Entered
Big idea
Roads, a common language and a stable empire were the conditions Jesus worked within. Context is not an excuse; it is raw material.
Session objectives
- ◆Map the conditions your organization actually operates in
- ◆Separate constraints you can change from those you must use
- ◆Find the 'roads' already available to your mission
Opening question
What in our context are we complaining about that we could be using?
Discussion questions
- 1.What are the three biggest external realities shaping our work right now?
- 2.Which of them are permanent, and which have we simply assumed?
- 3.What channels, platforms or relationships are already open to us?
- 4.Who in our community is best positioned to move our message?
Group exercise
Context map
- 1Draw two columns: Given (cannot change) and Open (can use)
- 2List ten realities of your city, sector or season across the columns
- 3Pick the two Open items with the widest reach
- 4Assign an owner to test each within 30 days
Commitment before next session
Choose one 'road' already open to you and use it once this month rather than building something new.

Communication
Facilitator note: open with the question, keep discussion to half the session, and end with every participant naming their commitment aloud.
