Spiritual Discernment and Practical Discernment Skills

Spiritual discernment and practical discernment are related, but they are not identical.

JesusIndex begins with Scripture, prayer, and a desire to remain aligned with Christ. Discernment.cc focuses on the practical skills that help people think more clearly within the values and mission they are trying to serve.

One does not replace the other.

JesusIndex asks

Spirit-led and Scripture-grounded
  • What does Scripture reveal?
  • What did Jesus actually do?
  • Where may my leadership or organization be out of alignment?
  • What deserves prayer and spiritual reflection?

Discernment.cc asks

Skill-led and value-grounded
  • What do I know?
  • What am I assuming?
  • What bias may be present?
  • What emotion is shaping my judgment?
  • What values am I trying to serve?
  • What action follows from what I now understand?
JesusIndex helps us seek alignment with Christ. Discernment.cc helps us strengthen the skills needed to think and decide well within the values we are seeking to honor.

Spiritual discernment sets the direction. Practical discernment skills can help us examine the path more carefully.

Practical skill does not replace prayer, critical thinking does not replace Scripture, and neither site replaces the church, pastoral guidance, or Christian community.
