Before the Decision

Mission Before Opportunity

Personal reflection · Matthew 4:1–11

You came here because: I am unsure whether an opportunity fits the mission

Observe

Matthew tells us Jesus was hungry, and the first offer enters through that real need. Jesus refuses, answering from Deuteronomy. The text does not suggest that miraculous provision is wrong — He will later feed thousands (Matthew 14:13–21). One reasonable observation is that He will not let immediate appetite decide how His power is used.

At the Temple, Scripture itself is quoted to Him. Jesus again refuses, and the Gospels show the same pattern later: He declines to produce signs on demand (Matthew 12:38–39; 16:1–4), even when taunted on the cross.

Offered every kingdom, He answers, “You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve” (Matthew 4:10). Authority will belong to Him (Matthew 28:18) — but not by this path.

Pray

Ask God to help you see which opportunities before you are truly yours to take — and to settle your identity in Him before you decide.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity about what you may be overlooking.
  • Bring the people affected by this decision into prayer.
5 / 6

Discernment pause

A brief pause to slow the decision down.

  • What do I know to be true?
  • What am I assuming?
  • Who is affected?
  • What may be influencing me?
  • What would alignment require?
  • What deserves prayer before action?
