Power and Authority

When People Want to Give You Power

Personal reflection · John 6:1–15

You came here because: I am struggling with authority or control

Observe

Jesus withdraws to a mountain alone. He does not confront or argue with the crowd, but physically removes Himself from the immediate pressure to accept power on their terms.

The next day when they find Him, Jesus addresses their motivation: “You are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves” (John 6:26). He recognizes their enthusiasm is based on an incomplete understanding of His purpose.

He refuses to allow the crowd’s expectation to redirect His mission. He does not interpret the willingness of thousands of people to confer power upon Him as proof that He should accept it.

Pray

Ask the Holy Spirit for the clarity to see when praise might be pulling you away from your true mission.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity about what you may be overlooking.
  • Bring the people affected by this decision into prayer.

Discernment pause

A brief pause to slow the decision down.

  • What do I know to be true?
  • What am I assuming?
  • Who is affected?
  • What may be influencing me?
  • What would alignment require?
  • What deserves prayer before action?
