Before the Decision

Knowing Why You Are Here

Personal reflection · Mark 1:21–39

Observe

Instead of returning to the city, Jesus responds to the news of his popularity by saying, “Let us go on to the next towns.” He does not evaluate the decision based on where He is most wanted or where the immediate demand seems greatest.

He explains His decision by connecting it to His core purpose: “for that is why I came out.” Luke's account reinforces this, recording Jesus saying, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose” (Luke 4:43).

The manuscript notes the sequence is important. Jesus withdraws to pray in solitude before the disciples find him. The decision to leave appears to flow from this time of quiet clarity, before He is confronted with the pressure of public demand.

Pray

Ask for the wisdom to know why you are here and the freedom to act on that purpose.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity about what you may be overlooking.
  • Bring the people affected by this decision into prayer.

Discernment pause

A brief pause to slow the decision down.

  • What do I know to be true?
  • What am I assuming?
  • Who is affected?
  • What may be influencing me?
  • What would alignment require?
  • What deserves prayer before action?
