Knowing When to Confront
Personal reflection · Luke 7:36–50

Observe
Jesus perceived Simon's unspoken thought and chose to confront the assumption beneath his silence. He begins, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
He tells a simple story of two debtors, allowing Simon to state the principle that the one forgiven a larger debt will love more. Only then does Jesus turn the conversation to the woman, asking, “Do you see this woman?”
Jesus contrasts Simon’s actions with the woman’s. Simon offered no water for His feet, no kiss of greeting, no oil for His head. The woman, in contrast, washed His feet with tears, kissed them unceasingly, and anointed them with ointment. He then turned to the woman and said, “Your sins are forgiven… Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Pray
Ask God for the discernment to see when an unchallenged assumption is causing harm and the wisdom to confront it in a way that restores.
- Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity about what you may be overlooking.
- Bring the people affected by this decision into prayer.
Discernment pause
A brief pause to slow the decision down.
- What do I know to be true?
- What am I assuming?
- Who is affected?
- What may be influencing me?
- What would alignment require?
- What deserves prayer before action?
