Grace and Truth

Personal reflection · John 1:14–18

Write as much or as little as you wish. Every field is optional, and you may stop at any point.

1 / 6

Observe

Jesus speaks the truth about the woman's five husbands and current living situation without using that history to humiliate her. Instead, the conversation continues, moving toward worship and her growing recognition of Jesus's identity.

In another encounter, Mark's Gospel notes that Jesus looks at a rich man and loves him before telling him what he lacks. The love is present, but it does not cause Jesus to soften the difficult requirement. He allows the man to walk away sorrowful rather than changing the invitation.

When Jesus meets Zacchaeus, He offers to enter his home before the man has made any commitment to restitution. Jesus's acceptance creates the context for transformation, rather than being a reward for it. The encounter produces a voluntary desire in Zacchaeus to repair the wrongs of his past.

Pray

Ask for the wisdom to hold grace and truth together, speaking honestly with a heart of love.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity about what you may be overlooking.
  • Bring the people affected by this decision into prayer.
5 / 6

Discernment pause

A brief pause to slow the decision down.

  • What do I know to be true?
  • What am I assuming?
  • Who is affected?
  • What may be influencing me?
  • What would alignment require?
  • What deserves prayer before action?
