The Decisions Jesus Refused to Make

Personal reflection · Luke 12:13–21

Write as much or as little as you wish. Every field is optional, and you may stop at any point.

Observe

Jesus explicitly refuses the role. He asks, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” Instead of settling the legal dispute, He uses the moment to address the deeper spiritual issue of greed, telling the parable of the rich fool.

The Gospels record a pattern of such refusals. When a crowd wanted to make Him king by force, He withdrew (John 6:15). When questioned by Herod, He gave no answer (Luke 23:9). He consistently resisted letting others define the scope of His work simply by asking, expecting, or demanding it.

Reflect

Respond to any of these questions — or none.

4 / 6

Pray

Ask for the wisdom to know your assignment and the courage to decline responsibilities that are not yours to carry.

  • Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity about what you may be overlooking.
  • Bring the people affected by this decision into prayer.
5 / 6

Discernment pause

A brief pause to slow the decision down.

  • What do I know to be true?
  • What am I assuming?
  • Who is affected?
  • What may be influencing me?
  • What would alignment require?
  • What deserves prayer before action?
6 / 6

Apply

Carry it forward

What responsibility have you accepted primarily because someone asked you to carry it, rather than because it truly belongs to your mission?
