Observe
Jesus responds not with a direct refusal but with a question that reframes their request. “You do not know what you are asking,” He says, asking if they can drink the cup He will drink (Mark 10:38). He connects the glory they desire with the suffering they have not yet understood.
When the other ten disciples become indignant, Jesus calls all of them together. He uses the conflict as a teaching moment for the entire group, suggesting the ambition of James and John was part of a wider struggle among them.
He contrasts the Gentile model of leadership—to “lord it over” others—with the standard for His followers: “But it shall not be so among you.” He redefines greatness not as rank or power, but as service, placing His own mission at the center of the definition.

Pray
Ask God to help you redefine greatness as He does: a life given in service to others.
- Ask the Holy Spirit for clarity about what you may be overlooking.
- Bring the people affected by this decision into prayer.
Discernment pause
A brief pause to slow the decision down.
- What do I know to be true?
- What am I assuming?
- Who is affected?
- What may be influencing me?
- What would alignment require?
- What deserves prayer before action?
