Biblical Leadership

Biblical Leadership: Nine Principles Jesus Modeled

What is biblical leadership?

Biblical leadership is leading people and organizations the way Scripture shows — above all, the way Jesus led. In about three years, with no title or budget, he formed a small team that carried his mission across the world. The Jesus Organization studies how he did it and groups what he modeled into nine principles.

The nine principles

  1. 01

    Mission Clarity

“But he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the Kingdom of God to the other cities also. For this reason I have been sent.””Luke 4:43

Jesus knew why he was sent, and it shaped where he went — even when the crowds wanted him to stay.

  2. 02

    Disciple Development

“He appointed twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach.”Mark 3:14

He chose a few people and invested in them closely before sending them out.

  3. 03

    Delegation & Empowerment

“He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them out to preach God’s Kingdom and to heal the sick.”Luke 9:1–2

Jesus gave his team real authority along with the responsibility, not just tasks.

  4. 04

    Stewardship & Resources

“He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much. He who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.”Luke 16:10

Faithfulness with small resources is the test for being trusted with larger ones.

  5. 05

    Communication

“Jesus spoke all these things in parables to the multitudes; and without a parable, he didn’t speak to them.”Matthew 13:34

He made deep truth memorable with stories drawn from his listeners’ everyday lives.

  6. 06

    Community & Relationships

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”John 13:35

The way people treat one another is itself the evidence of the mission.

  7. 07

    Servant Leadership

“For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”Mark 10:45

Greatness in Jesus’ movement is measured by service, and he named himself as the model.

  8. 08

    Multiplication & Succession

“The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same things to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”2 Timothy 2:2

Four generations in one sentence: leadership that lasts is passed on on purpose.

  9. 09

    Spiritual Dependence

“But he withdrew himself into the desert, and prayed.”Luke 5:16

At the height of demand, Jesus stepped away to pray. His strength and timing came from the Father.
